Tapping the Universe: Habitat III and Transportation

Abstract
Science, technology, communications, generational preference differences, the changing environment, and need for social justice and equity describe a few of the dynamics of the 21st century. With each challenge comes opportunity. This discussion explores the results of the United Nations Habitat III Conference in Quito, Ecuador (October 2016) with an eye to the generational implications from the two previous habitat conferences in 1976 and 1996. Each Habitat Conference brings together a diverse range of perspectives on the global dynamics of human communities focusing on cities. Essentially, cities around the globe are looking for 21st century ideas to cope with the changing dynamics of urban travel. Driverless vehicles, smart transit, and environmentally sensitive travel capture our imagination. The United Nations Habitat conferences traditionally bring together the best ideas from across the globe to focus on the future of human communities in urban settings. We transportation professionals need to understand these essential elements to our work in providing mobility for our communities. By distilling the Habitat III conference results down to the implications for transportation professionals in the United States, we will expose attendees to a whole range of international perspectives on the issues we are addressing each and every day.
