WIFI data collection for I-95 Managed Lanes Master Plan Project in Southeast Florida, and the effectiveness of various survey expansion techniques.

Abstract

WIFI Origin-Destination surveys have been effective data collection methods, resulting in satisfactory sample rates. Acyclica WIFI equipment was deployed along I-95 at 64 locations, to capture vehicle Origin-Destination (OD) patterns by detecting anonymous Media Access Control (MAC ) addresses. The data was used for supporting traffic analysis of the I-95 managed lanes masterplan project. Simultaneous traffic count data was collected at each of the key WiFI stations to expand the survey sample. The station-specific sampling rates of 15-50% were observed, with an overall sampling rate of 30%, in this study.

This paper focuses on exploring the effectiveness WIFI data collection, and describes the practical experiences and its pros and cons. In addition, it examines the effectiveness of various OD survey expansion techniques, and illustrates the effectiveness of using various seed matrices for OD expansion. Expansion techniques using the traditional FRATAR-based methods were compared against the more advanced ODME optimization techniques. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the use of different seed matrices were tested. Tests were conducted using seed matrices from WIFI survey sample, Model-extracted subarea OD, and an all-ones matrix. Finally, the paper summarizes the corridor travel patterns and major origins and destinations in determining the managed lane access points on I-95 in Florida’s Palm Beach County.
